New Tech Meetup Girl Power

Note from the Managing Editor: It’s exciting to see more women participate in entrepreneurship! We absolutely need more of them. I wasn’t at the event so I cannot comment on the quality of presentations, but I did see Platial.com’s 5 minute pitch and thought it was pretty motivating to see. Girls, keep it up! ~ Jessica Mah

This month’s SF NewTech Meetup was once again held in the nice and fancy Metreon Action Theatre and showcased all women entrepreneurs. This month probably had the most women in attendance and as usual, the pizza ran out pretty fast. The presentations included:
Bambi Francisco, Founder and CEO of Vator.tv
Tina Sharkey, Chairman & Global President of BabyCenter (She was funny!)
Mary Hodder, Founder & CEO of Dabble
Caroline Bernadi, Co-Founder & VP of Nonprofit Success of FreePledge
Sheryl Hamlin, Founder & President of Bizy
Di-Ann Eisnor, Founder & CEO of Platial

1) Quality of Presentations: 7/10: It seemed like more people wandered out throughout the evening as usual which could be due to the technical difficulties every time a new presenter was trying to setup their laptop. Personally, the presentations and websites were not that interesting to me and this event seemed like it lasted forever. If anyone else feels differently, please leave a comment and let me know what you think. (rating raised by managing editor - quality of presentations should not be confused with technical difficulties, as noted by several readers and attendees at the event)

2) Venue: 9/10 The theatre and setup is great at the Metreon Action Theatre except the seats suck and I am not really sure why they keep switching on/off/between the 3 different monitors. If all the presentations were always on all 3 screens every month, that would be great.

3) Food/Drink: 6/10 As always the pizza runs out extremely fast, but there is always water and beer available.

4) Quality/Quantity of Attendees: 8/10 I think this month brought in a lot more newcomers with the topic of Women in Tech. I actually got there when the presentations started and didn’t get a chance to work the room but it looked like a good crowd of people. There was also a woman who kept asked each presenter what their business model was and that got annoying pretty fast.

5) Overall, worth attending? If you get there on time and have a chance to get pizza and mingle, it is probably worth your time. It is also good to hear about different startups and this month was a little more interesting since it featured all women entrepreneurs. The startups, however, were not as interesting as some other ones out there.
